Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Pick the 'What is X% of Y?' mode, enter the percentage as X and the base value as Y. The calculator computes X% of Y by multiplying Y by X and dividing by 100. For example, 25% of 200 is (200 × 25) ÷ 100 = 50.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Switch to 'X is what % of Y?' and enter the part as X and the whole as Y. The result is (X ÷ Y) × 100. For example, 50 out of 250 is (50 ÷ 250) × 100 = 20%.

How do I calculate percentage change between two values?

Choose 'Percent change' and enter the starting and ending values. The formula is ((To − From) ÷ From) × 100. A positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

Why does percent change require a nonzero starting value?

Percent change is measured relative to the starting value. If the starting value is zero, the relative change is undefined, so the calculator shows an explanatory state instead of a misleading number.
