Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions with diagrams
About this calculator
The Fractions Calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides any two fractions and shows the fully simplified result along with its mixed-number form. Visual fraction diagrams make each operation easy to understand. Great for students learning fraction arithmetic and anyone who needs reliable fractional math.
How to add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions
- Enter the first fraction's numerator and denominator.
- Pick an operation: add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
- Enter the second fraction's numerator and denominator.
- Read the simplified result and the mixed-number form when relevant.
Common examples
- 3/4 + 1/6 = 11/12
- 5/8 − 1/4 = 3/8
- 2/3 × 3/5 = 2/5
- 7/8 ÷ 1/4 = 7/2 = 3½
- 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1½
Frequently asked questions
How does the fraction calculator simplify results?
After computing the operation, the calculator divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For example, 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 because the GCD of 6 and 8 is 2.
Can the result be shown as a mixed number?
Yes. When the result is an improper fraction (numerator larger than denominator), the calculator also shows the mixed number form. For instance, 7/2 is also displayed as 3½.
What happens if I enter a zero denominator?
A fraction with a zero denominator is undefined. The calculator highlights the invalid input and waits for a valid denominator before computing.
How are negative fractions handled?
Negative numerators are supported. The result is normalized so the denominator stays positive and any overall negative sign lives on the numerator (for example, the result of 1/2 − 3/4 is shown as −1/4).
